FLAVIUS
The Gaul’s cavalry had taken us totally by surprise. There
had been no sign of any mounted force reported by our scouts,
damn them all to Hades. If we survived this day, they surely would not! Ahead of my cohort, the main attacking force had
faltered under the deadly barrage of arrows. The gaps in the line
were not being filled quickly enough from behind. I ordered my
men forward at the run, and that’s when the Gauls surprised us.
I saw Prince Callistus lead the first cavalry charge. Bare-
chested, his flaxen hair streaming in the wind, he looked like an
avenging god as he raced at the head of his men, charging
straight into our ranks, his sword wreaking havoc among the
troops. Trying to rally my men was near impossible. Attacked
from both sides, they panicked, bumping into one another in an
effort to escape the flailing hooves and slashing swords that
gouged a great path of destruction through their ranks.
Fortunately, reinforcements in the form of another cohort
arrived, and we managed to regain the ground we had lost. The
Gallic cavalry attacking on our right flank was beaten back, but
the prince’s headlong charge had proved more effective, cutting
off part of my cohort from the main body, and leaving them
weak and easy prey.
I heard the order to retreat, and urged my men to fall back.
Surprisingly, the Gauls did not give chase, but regrouped
behind Prince Callistus and his cavalry. But we were not home
free. The sound of their deadly arrows once more filled the air,
striking fear into the hearts of those who fled from the field.
